Product Photography How-To

If your interested in learning studio based product photography, the best place to learn that I’m aware of is Photigy. Photigy and it’s Co-Founder Alex Koloskov along with a very talented list of instructors provide you with 3 ways to learn studio product photography. The first being their Studio Basics Program a subscription based service that allows you to start at the beginning with equipment suggestion, Photoshop and Lightroom training, Shooting objects with one or more lights, Picking which lens to use and how to work with subjects with different surfaces. It also offers photo challenges to give you an opportunity to use your new skills. Then you have ProClub which as it sounds is geared toward the people that have more experience and probably more equipment. The program is geared towards producing portfolio quality images, with a new sense of creativity, new techniques, and artistic training. The last method that Photigy.com provides for anyone interested in product or splash photography is it’s offering of individual stand alone course that covers everything from splash photography, jewelry, working with 3D programs like 4D cinema and watch photography just to name a few. If you’re interested in learning product photography you should really check out what Photigy.com has to offer you. And without spending a dime you look at and post on the Photigy.com website or do the facebook thing at Photigy’s facebook page. Any of these options are an inexpensive way to start learning product photography on your own schedule with whatever equipment you might have on hand. And don’t forget about the best feature of the Photigy.com community, feedback. When you have a question, produce an image or for any other reason related to product photography you can post it on the Photigy forum or on the Photigy facebook page and get feedback from Instructors and other members of the Photigy.com community and feed back and critiques are priceless when provided by people that care about your advancement in Product Photography.

Product Photography – Western New York, Chautauqua County

Building the product image of Dripping Lipstick involved producing multiple images in the studio. One of the upside down lipstick, one of the standing lipstick case, another of a drip of nail polish, and then the one of the nail polish dripping down the lipstick case and puddling on the table. There was also a large amount of Photoshop done to clean up the elements and change the colors of all the elements to match.

A composite of 6 images make up the image posted below. I shot each element separate so that I could control every element during the photographic process as well as the Post Processing in Photoshop. Product (studio) photography is all about control and being able to produce the images that the clients bring into the studio. There was also a element of motion stopping using high speed flash.
