Jewelry Product Photography

Frog necklace

Jewelry photograph of a highly polished silver Frog necklace

Jewelry photography requires some special considerations. You’re usually working with very small products that require a very detailed image with all the highlights and gems showing both smooth highlights and dark tone to show the shape of the piece as well as the material that the piece is made from, whether it’s smooth and highly polished or textured. Then you may have stones to deal with and getting them to sparkle and shine. And it can be difficult to get all these materials and surfaces to look good in one image and may require excessive Photoshop to bring everything into one great looking image that can be used for marketing and sales materials.

This image was produced in the studio with a single speedlight (on camera type flash) shot thru a double layer of tracing paper that was placed behind the subject and then light was bounced around with a couple silver cards to fill in the front of the products as well as some photoshop retouching to clean up the product.

In the studio I place this small perfume bottle on a post to allow me to light it from all directions. 3 lights with strip or soft boxes and some reflectors where used to light the bottle. Then a bit of retouching was done in photoshop to clean up the image and finish it off.

It is tuff to get multiple subjects to have that great expression all at the same time. Eyes blink, people turn heads, mouths open. What do you do? Rescedule the session or work a little photoshop magic. In this case photoshop was

the way to go. These images where shot in quickly so the subjects body size and placement made the fix some what easy.

Look at the eyes on the two subjects in the rear of the images.

Introduction to Moore Images

2 05 2010

Moore Images is a professional Commercial Photography business in Westfield N.Y.  I started in photography like a lot of people got there start in high school shooting for the yearbook. I did everything from covering sporting events and every day life in the hallways to doing my own film developing and printing. Then while in college I was taking a woodworking class that required portfolio pictures to be taken so I started taking college level photography classes and took every class that the local community college had to offer.  While  I was taking the photography classes at the community college I started a part-time job that quickly turned into a full time job at one of the local photo processing labs. During this time I did everything from retail camera sales, operating a one hour processing machine, custom darkroom work and custom studio work.  After about three years of working in this photography lab I decided to further my photographic training by attending the Ohio Institute of photography. Where I studied for two years with an emphasis on commercial and advertising photography. After returning to Western New York when I completed my photographic training at the Ohio Institute of photography I started working as a freelance independent photographer. I provided services to individuals, businesses, advertising agencies,  while also  providing wedding photography and portraiture in the Western New York and Northwestern Pennsylvania areas.

During the past 30 years I have done pretty much everything that can be done in photography. I have experience with all formats of film cameras including 4 x 5, medium format, 35mm and now with digital cameras, I’ve also have extensive custom darkroom and now extensive Photoshop and  other digital editing and management programs  experience.

I have completed assignments in factories and industrial settings, I have produced small product and large product studio shots for ad agencies and manufacturers, I have worked for local newspapers, and provided wedding coverage and  all facets of portrait photography to the local community.
