A composite put together in Photoshop of spring water pouring into a glass on white. High speed flash used to stop the motion of the water and capture it as a split second rather than a soft flowing bit of water. Area left in the scene to drop marketing type.

Small product photography

Perfume bottle and creative use of smoke

A studio image of a small decorated perfume bottle done as a single exposure and then a seprate exposures of the smoke where taken and added to the perfume bottle. The humming bird was created in Photoshop by taking images of smoke and shaping them into the humming bird shape. Photoshop was also used to retouch the bottle to get rid of imperfections and dust and to create the reflection.

Makeup powder burst 1- Product photographer – Jamestown, Chautauqua County N.Y.

19 01 2015

A composite of 6 images make up the image posted below. I shot each element separate so that I could control every element during the photographic process as well as the Post Processing in Photoshop. Product (studio) photography is all about control and being able to produce the images that the clients bring into the studio. There was also a element of motion stopping using high speed flash.

Light Painting, Studio Photography

Yellow dress purse or clutch light painted on black slate. The process used to record this image was to use a small LED flashlight with a PVC light modifier to brush light across the texture of the purse in multiple exposures. The seprate images (a total of 5) where combined in Photoshop using layer masking to bring all the images together, The final work was done in Lightroom 5.

Product Photography -Makeup brush with powder

This image of a make up brush with powder was taken using two lights and a reflector. The first light is the one lighting the left side of the brush, it’s a 12×36″ stripbox shooting thru a 36×36″ diffusion panel made up of savage diffusion plastic on a PVC frame. The second light is shot thru a snoot and pointed at the head of the brush and the powder. The right side of the brush was lit with a white foamcore reflector.  The final image is a composite of two images- one of the brush handle and one of the brush head and then so final cleanup in photoshop.

Wine Bottle Photography

Each bottle was photographed separately on a white background and then removed from the studio shot using the selection tools in photoshop. Once I had each wine bottle removed from the background I could build a background in photoshop as in the second version or I could take any image in my library and add the bottles over that image as I did with the Johnson Estate bottles and the winter image of the Winery and Gift shop.

Three versions of a small product studio shot of a pair of Xmas tree shaped wine bottles from a local winery in Northeast P.A. called Arrowhead Winery on Rt 20.

The bottles where placed on a table in front of white background paper and lite with two 30×40 soft boxes, one on each side of the bottle towards the back illuminating the back edges and contents of the bottle. Then I placed two 30×40 white foam core boards in front of the subjects to reflect lights back onto the lettering and front of the bottles. I bracketed the exposures and during the post processing I pulled one of the underexposed images and used the underexposed sides of the bottles and combined the proper exposure of the bottles and the proper exposure of the sides into one combined exposure in PhotoshopCC.

I used fake snow to surround the bottles and add a bit of seasonal element to the foreground image.

Backgrounds:

The color lights where produced with Xmas lights hanging from a bar in the studio with the camera out of focus.

Snow covered evergreens was a stock shot I had on file

The red and yellow streaks where produced with a preset from OnOne enhance.

The bottles and snow where cut out of the studio background using the pen tool in PhotoshopCC. With the background removed it was easy to experiment with different backgrounds.

New Photoshop Technique – Photos from Westfield N.Y. and Chautauqua Institution

10 03 2012

Have been working on a new technique in photoshop to blend a photo with a couple of other layers to give the image a painterly, drawing with a bit of the photo showing through it all.

The photograph was duped in PS5 and that dupe was changed into a black and white and then duped again and some filter effects added to give it a drawing look and then blended and combined on top of the photograph layer.  Then the background texture layer was brought in and moved to the bottom of the stack.  A multiply layer blend was added to the top layer and a black adjustment mask was added to the original photo layer to allow the selected blending of the whole group.

Another ad for a local brewery – self assigned photoshop exercise

11 01 2012

This is a self assigned photoshop exercise using a couple of images I already had on hand. The beer bottle label on the lighthouse is from the semi truck post made yesterday  and the Barcelona lighthouse and  harbor is a sunset panorama of the Barcelona lighthouse and harbor in Westfield N.Y. on Lake Erie is from 2010. The label was made to fit the lighthouse using the free transform tool in PS5. Some density control, contrast adjustment, and selective density control with the layers mask and bush tool was used to make the label appear that it is painted on the lighthouse.

If you have the opportunity to try some of Southern Tier Brewery’s offerings you should try it out.

Your next cold one’s on the way

10 01 2012

This is a composite image of the truck and beer bottle. The truck was taken at ISO 100, f13 @ 60th of a sec. with a 44mm zoom on the lens. The truck was moving at about 60 mph and I was hand holding the camera thru a pan.

The beer bottle was shot in the studio with 2 canon 580 exll on camera flashes, 1 on the camera for fill and one behind the bottle in a 24″x24″ softbox triggered with radio poppers. The on camera flash that was used for fill was 2 stops less than the back light.

Both images where taken into PS5 for the composite, motion blur was added to separate layers and dupes of layers to give me complete control. Some desaturation was added as well as color in the sky, darkening of the corners and sky, and I “constructed” the structure to support the neck of the bottle. I also added some noise to the bottle to better match the trucks noise or grain.

Toy train for composite

Percy the toy train for composite

Toy train hot glued to a 2×4 that is covered with white foam core. The 2×4 is attached to a bogen magic arm which is attached to a light stand. The magic arm allows me to adjust the position of the 2×4 to better match the angle of the bridge. The train was cut out of the image in PS5 using the pen tool and refine edge function.

The bridge image was taken with a 18 – 135 mm zoom at 38mm. The wires were removed in Photoshop. The image was also taken into HDR software where there was a little work done to enhance the image.

Westfield N.Y. Passenger Train Station

Train depot composite

Westfield N.Y. Passenger Train Station

A great looking cut stone train terminal in Westfield N.Y. This is the passenger station on English St. If you look in the windows of the station it looks like the doors were closed in the 1940 and nothings been touched since. Roll top desk, old fan, typewriter, old luggage and packages all just sitting in place. Very neat. I would love to get in and do some images. Not open to the public as far as I know.

These are all 3 image HDRs done in HDR efex pro. The composite was done in PS5.

Northeast P.A. Passenger Train Station

Northeast P.A. train station

Passenger train station in Northeast P.A.

This is the Northeast P.A. Passenger train station which is now a railway museum. You can view numerous pieces of rolling stock, view displays inside the station and watch current trains traveling on the still active tracks outside the door. To find out more go to:  http: //www.grape-track.org/

The larger image is a single image of the station with some contrast added and some work with the adjustment brush in Lightroom3. The two smaller images are 3 image HDR’s. The 3 images are 2 stops each side of normal, the -2 stop image allows the blue in the sky to be pulled out and the clouds to look more cloud like rather than the gray mess of clouds seen in the upper image. The simple composite of the 3 images was done in PS5.
