Large Product Lightpainting Photography- Erie Pa, Chautauqua County New York

Lightpainting Product Photography

A classic Massey Ferguson tractor in a field, I used a lightpainting technique to give the tractor a unique painterly look that you can’t achieve any other way. Lightpainting like this is done with a small Olight M10 Maverick  LED flashlight and combining multiple images in Photoshop to build up the final image. In this case I used 31 separate images out of 81 total exposures. The tractor was brushed in light in small areas to light each part of the image slightly different but will still blend well with the other 30 images. In Photoshop the images are stacked and blending modes changed and then layer masks where used to help blend all the images together to come up with the final image.

Scenic Photography in Chautauqua County N.Y.

Barcelona Harbor and lighthouse in Westfield N.Y., Chautauqua County along Lake Erie.

This image was captured on July 3, 2014. The Canon 5D markIII with the 24-70mm 2.8L was setup on a really right stuff nodal slide so that the camera pivoted around the nodal point of the lens, which allows the exposures to line up better when they are stitched together in photoshop. This images is make up of 21 exposures. That’s 3 exposures at each of 7 camera positions. The 3 exposures where taken into efexpro HDR soft for the High dynamic Range processing. After each of the set of 3 exposures are processed the resulting 7 files are taken into photoshop so that the stitching could be preformed. Once photoshop does it’s thing the resulting pano is fine tuned in both photoshop and lightroom.

It’s getting to be the end of Cherry season here in Chautauqua County New York. I figured I would preserve the harvest is my way, with a photograph rather than canning or freezing. The taste isn’t as fresh but they should last longer.

This was produced with a single Medium Softbox (24×36″) coming in from the rear left side of the image, a black card in front of the softbox to knock down the light spill on the table and bowl, a white foamcore fill card in the front right. The image was finished in Lightroom and Onone Photoshop plugins.

Final version of Train Day Photo

In the final version of the image you can see that I spent some time in Photoshop removing the people in the image. I had to rebuild part of the building using different portions of the brick facade and doors, as well as parts of the passenger train car and the ground on both sides of the train. Also a little adjustment brush in Lightroom 4 to brighten up the train and the copper observation balcony and upper doors.

This is an interior architectural photograph of the St. Luke’s main sanctuary looking from the alter back to the main entrance. I used a 7 exposure bracket to produce this HDR image in niksoftware efexHDRpro 2, then some work in Photoshop and Lightroom to come up with the final look.

Finished Timber Frame at Tanglewood Manor untitled-263_HDR_2-2

Two quick shots taken on Dec 14th 2012. These are more HDR images taken at Tanglewood Manor in Jamestown N.Y. I spent maybe five minutes getting the exposure for these. The camera was set on Aperture Priority, Auto Exposure Bracket, the exposure was Normal, -1 stop and -2 stops. The day was kind of grey and lifeless, HDR was needed to force some pop out of the image. Some contrast, clarity and vibrance  where added in Lightroom 4 after efex HDRpro did its thing. The total time on this shot including shooting and processing is maybe 15minutes.

The below image is what the camera picked as normal (this is straight out of the camera)

This HDR image is made up of 3 handheld exposures taken at Normal, -1, -2 stops and then combined in efex HDR and then taken into photoshop for some final touches.  To start the process off I had to take each image into photoshop to remove elements that the HDR program couldn’t keep from ghosting when the 3 images are combined. Then the images where taken into the HDR program to let it do it’s thing, which I think does a very good job. Then like I stated above it was taken into PS5 for some fine tuning. Location of image is the memory gardens at Tanglewood Manor in Jamestown N.Y.

New Photoshop Technique – Photos from Westfield N.Y. and Chautauqua Institution

10 03 2012

Have been working on a new technique in photoshop to blend a photo with a couple of other layers to give the image a painterly, drawing with a bit of the photo showing through it all.

The photograph was duped in PS5 and that dupe was changed into a black and white and then duped again and some filter effects added to give it a drawing look and then blended and combined on top of the photograph layer.  Then the background texture layer was brought in and moved to the bottom of the stack.  A multiply layer blend was added to the top layer and a black adjustment mask was added to the original photo layer to allow the selected blending of the whole group.

Another ad for a local brewery – self assigned photoshop exercise

11 01 2012

This is a self assigned photoshop exercise using a couple of images I already had on hand. The beer bottle label on the lighthouse is from the semi truck post made yesterday  and the Barcelona lighthouse and  harbor is a sunset panorama of the Barcelona lighthouse and harbor in Westfield N.Y. on Lake Erie is from 2010. The label was made to fit the lighthouse using the free transform tool in PS5. Some density control, contrast adjustment, and selective density control with the layers mask and bush tool was used to make the label appear that it is painted on the lighthouse.

If you have the opportunity to try some of Southern Tier Brewery’s offerings you should try it out.

Your next cold one’s on the way

10 01 2012

This is a composite image of the truck and beer bottle. The truck was taken at ISO 100, f13 @ 60th of a sec. with a 44mm zoom on the lens. The truck was moving at about 60 mph and I was hand holding the camera thru a pan.

The beer bottle was shot in the studio with 2 canon 580 exll on camera flashes, 1 on the camera for fill and one behind the bottle in a 24″x24″ softbox triggered with radio poppers. The on camera flash that was used for fill was 2 stops less than the back light.

Both images where taken into PS5 for the composite, motion blur was added to separate layers and dupes of layers to give me complete control. Some desaturation was added as well as color in the sky, darkening of the corners and sky, and I “constructed” the structure to support the neck of the bottle. I also added some noise to the bottle to better match the trucks noise or grain.

The truck I found parked in a parking lot at the Chautauqua Mall. The truck image was taken with a Canon G12 point and shoot camera, it was all I had with me. The truck was cut out of its background using the pen tool in PS5, I also cleaned up the front fender and the door of the truck to reduce the reflection in both. The side and rear windows were also cut out to show the background. The background was burned in or darkened were the window are to indicate the tint of the windows.

Straight out of camera, great looking doorway. Shot with a low angle camera position and a wide angle (17mm) lens causing some of the converging lines.

I leveled out some of the horizontal  lines to square up the image.  Process  the 3 images as a HDR, the scene really didn’t need a 3 frame HDR to get the detail in the shadow because the doorway was in shadow and an over cast day. I used the 3 images just to see what results I would get.

A little under exposed perhaps but brightening it up would cause the sky to lose all detail.

Patterson Library - Processed in Lightroom 3

Patterson Library - Westfield N.Y. - Processed in Lightroom 3

This image was developed in Lightroom 3. We have a more interesting image, not as flat, more contrast, more pop in the colors, more detail in the sky, and just more interesting to look at.

Patterson Library - garden HDR

Patterson Library - garden view HDR

This image is a 3 frame HDR. Starting with a normal exposure, +1stop and a -2stop  to get more blue in the sky. The image also received some adjustment brush work in Lightroom 3 to light up the flowers, the building and the fence structure along with the bench.

Which one do you like better and why? Please leave comments.
