HDR Pano of Barcelona Harbor, Westfield N.Y.

Scenic Photography in Chautauqua County N.Y.

Barcelona Harbor and lighthouse in Westfield N.Y., Chautauqua County along Lake Erie.

This image was captured on July 3, 2014. The Canon 5D markIII with the 24-70mm 2.8L was setup on a really right stuff nodal slide so that the camera pivoted around the nodal point of the lens, which allows the exposures to line up better when they are stitched together in photoshop. This images is make up of 21 exposures. That’s 3 exposures at each of 7 camera positions. The 3 exposures where taken into efexpro HDR soft for the High dynamic Range processing. After each of the set of 3 exposures are processed the resulting 7 files are taken into photoshop so that the stitching could be preformed. Once photoshop does it’s thing the resulting pano is fine tuned in both photoshop and lightroom.

These two panoramic images where made on March 24, 2013. Using a Canon 5D Mark iii and a Canon 24-70 2.8L at 42mm. This is a 5 position HDR pano using 4 of the 7 bracketed exposures that I took at the time, that means that I combined 20 exposures 4 at each camera position and then took the resulting 5 images into Photoshop and merged them into a pano. Then I did a little enhancement in both photoshop and Lightroom to come up with what you see here.

Another ad for a local brewery – self assigned photoshop exercise

11 01 2012

This is a self assigned photoshop exercise using a couple of images I already had on hand. The beer bottle label on the lighthouse is from the semi truck post made yesterday  and the Barcelona lighthouse and  harbor is a sunset panorama of the Barcelona lighthouse and harbor in Westfield N.Y. on Lake Erie is from 2010. The label was made to fit the lighthouse using the free transform tool in PS5. Some density control, contrast adjustment, and selective density control with the layers mask and bush tool was used to make the label appear that it is painted on the lighthouse.

If you have the opportunity to try some of Southern Tier Brewery’s offerings you should try it out.

This slideshow is highlighting some of the images taken last night of the sunset at the Barcelona harbor in Westfield, New York. The slideshow has both the straight out of the camera image and the processed image out of nik software’s HDR efex. Some I feel are over processed, but I’m starting to like the look a little more each time I do it. The straight out of the camera image looks flat and just doesn’t have the pop that the HDR’s have but maybe I’m over doing the processing and getting to much pop, texture, contrast. What do you think? The barn image was also taken yesterday when we had such great clouds so I just included it along with the sunsets.

Barcelona Harbor Time-Laspe V.02

29 07 2011

This time-laspe has been improved by adding an exposure gradient filter to the lower half of all the 600+ images. This was done in Lightroom 3 which makes it very easy to do this correction with their synch function, all 600+ images corrected in minutes. I think this version is a lot better by brightening the foreground so that the activity can be seen in the harbor and along the shoreline.

Go to the list on the right and click on Barcelona lighthouse New York to see more images of the lighthouse.

This is may second attempt at a timelaspe sequence. This sunset at Barcelona Harbor and Lighthouse was shot July 13, 2011 over about 1.5 hours and over 650 individual images combined at 15 frames a second to give you a 34 second finished video. Look for the ducks swimming and the two boats docking after a day out fishing.

Critique : There’s a couple of glitches in the video cause by me playing with the timer controller. Still learning the controller, I think I have it figured out now and the next timelaspe should be better.

Barcelona New York Harbor Sunset Panorama

30 09 2010

On this night I happened to look out the window while working on the computer. The entire sky and landscape had this great orange yellow glow to it so I grabbed the camera and headed out the door the see what the sunset looked like over lake erie at Barcelona Harbor in Westfield New York. The sunset over the lake was incredible. There were more people photographing this sunset than I have ever seen. The small size that I can produce here doesn’t do the panos any justice at all.

Barcelona Harbor New York Kayakers

24 09 2010

Every Tuesday night a local outfitter has a kayaking paddle out of Barcelona harbor. I got lucky with this photograph of the kayakers that where about 2 miles east of Barcelona Harbor on Lake Erie in Westfield New York. The timing of the sunset and the location and the route that the kayakers took this night all worked out to help with the success of this image. I also used the longest focal length lens that I could and still get the framing I was looking for in the final image. The long lens compresses the distance between the kayakers and the sunset. There is a little color shift done in photoshop to enhance the colors that where already present. Sunsets on Lake Erie have been a frequent subject this summer.

Barcelona Harbor Light

20 09 2010

It’s starting to look like I live to close to the Barcelona Lighthouse and Harbor with the number of Lighthouse and harbor post I have on the blog, but it is a great place to live and the sunsets can be breath taking. If you don’t spend much time on the North Coast of Chautauqua Co. you should make plans to spend sometime enjoying all that this area has to offer.

Photoshop composite- combining Barcelona harbor sunset and crossfire photograph

The finished image that you see here takes two of my photographs and combines them into one, the difficulty of combining these two images was to get the cars size proportioned correctly with the Light House and to get the lights from the cars- the headlights and marker lights to show up on the ground as if it was really there. This was accomplished in Photoshop of course by combining two multiple layers one of the lighthouse image one and one of the car image. When combining multiple images it’s important to start with two or more quality photographs if you have bad images going in it’s hard to make a good finished product. I believe that both of these images work well together because of how the images seem to fit together as if it was originally shot that way.

Trying to make a believable composite of the last two post. What do you think?

While working in photoshop last night I looked out the window and everything was orange. Figuring it could only mean a great sunset that I was missing was happening right outside the house. I grabbed my camera and headed out the door for Barcelona Harbor and lighthouse. Once I arrived I found this incredible sunset and the most photographers I have ever scene at the harbor trying there hand at capturing one of natures marvels. This photograph of the lighthouse and sunset is made up of two exposures that where combined in photoshop. I really would like to see what the other photographers came away with that night.

This image was shot some time ago with film. The image is straight out of the camera, the film used was a tungsten balance film which gives the image that great blue tone. The “matting” was done in photoshop.

These images are from the same shoot as the previous post. The version with more deal of the lighthouse and harbor at Barcelona in Westfield New York is a HDR image. An HDR image is made up of multiple images of the same subject taken at different exposures and then combined into an image that shows detail in the shadow and highlights that is impossible for the cameras sensor to record on its own in a single exposure. These images are more examples of what I came home with last night. I guess came home with is not quite right because this went into photoshop just like the panoramic image. Combined different images taken at different exposure setting to pull out some of the detail that a back lite image loses. Then there was a graduated black fill added to a separate layer and then the opacity was reduced on this layer to darken the top of the image some.

Last night I went to Barcelona Harbor on Lake Erie in Westfield N.Y. Barcelona Harbor and Lighthouse is one of the many jewels on Lake Erie in Chautauqua County New York. The small harbor and lighthouse is a frequent subject of mine because I live about 1.5 miles away and the sunset can be incredible. But this night there wasn’t much of a sunset so I played around a little. I set the exposure of the camera at -2 1/2 stops from what the cameras meter was suggesting as a proper exposure. Also since I was doing a panorama of the scene I had to consider the lower light levels as I rotated the camera around the scene and away from the sun. With the exposure set I rotated the camera around the scene taking a total of 6 images.  Once back a the computer I opened the images in Adobe bridge and then loaded them into photomerge in photoshop and then I let photoshop preform it’s magic. After photoshop did it’s thing I went into the image and cleaned up some of the areas were the multiple images came together. With the image prepared I saved the images as a master file and them flattened a version of it to make some additional changes, with the image flattened I duplicated it onto another layer and then added a levels adjustment mask to this layer and used the levels to lighten the image to get some foreground detail. With the lighter image I added an adjustment mask so that I could paint back in the darker image in the layer below it. Most of the painting was done in the sky area to bring back the better exposure on the original image while leaving the detail in the foreground. I also removed some electrical power lines from the upper left corner of the image.

For not being a very good sunset I think the underexposure and the photoshop tonal control ended up making a nice image.
