New Photoshop Technique – Photos from Westfield N.Y. and Chautauqua Institution

10 03 2012

Have been working on a new technique in photoshop to blend a photo with a couple of other layers to give the image a painterly, drawing with a bit of the photo showing through it all.

The photograph was duped in PS5 and that dupe was changed into a black and white and then duped again and some filter effects added to give it a drawing look and then blended and combined on top of the photograph layer.  Then the background texture layer was brought in and moved to the bottom of the stack.  A multiply layer blend was added to the top layer and a black adjustment mask was added to the original photo layer to allow the selected blending of the whole group.

HDR image after lightpainting - Westfield N.Y. - Chautauqua Co. N.Y.

HDR image after lightpainting and then taken back into HDR software

The top two images are from a previous post showing the image after coming out of HDR efex pro, the the same image after doing some light painting in Photoshop CS5. I like the second image better than any of the straight out of camera image and the straight out of HDR software image but it still wasn’t right, what I envisioned as the finished image. I walked away from the image for awhile, when I  got back to it I took the light painted image into nik software HDR efex pro to rework it. With quite a bit of structure added to the image as well as some tonal control we have made the image look more like what I think it should.

I do this a lot. Walking away from an image and coming back to it days, weeks, even months later to rework it.

Percy in Westfield N.Y. – Railroad image

Toy train for composite

Percy the toy train for composite

Toy train hot glued to a 2×4 that is covered with white foam core. The 2×4 is attached to a bogen magic arm which is attached to a light stand. The magic arm allows me to adjust the position of the 2×4 to better match the angle of the bridge. The train was cut out of the image in PS5 using the pen tool and refine edge function.

The bridge image was taken with a 18 – 135 mm zoom at 38mm. The wires were removed in Photoshop. The image was also taken into HDR software where there was a little work done to enhance the image.

Image #1

Straight out of the camera

Image #2

Light painted in Photoshop CS5. Duplicated image darkened down dupe with a levels adjustment layer and them painted away the dupe to shape and highlight sections of the image to give it some character that wasn’t in the original image.

Image #3

The light painted image was taken into HDR software to add saturation, structure (clarity) and vignette.

Photography by: Kurt A. Moore – Moore Images Photographic Services – Westfield N.Y.

Pretty straight forward shot of a sculpture on the campus of Fredonia State University in Fredonia N.Y. Chautauqua County

There was a little tone adjustments (dodging and burning) done to lighten the sculpture a little and to tone down and even out the sky. The lens flare is right out of PS5

Sunrise picture of the Chautauqua Institution’s Miller Bell Tower and Chautauqua Lake N.Y. which is in the western part of New York State in Chautauqua County. Sitting at the computer with 40 degree temps outside and just figured a nice summer time sunrise images would make people feel a little warmer. Hope it worked.

Railway photographs in black and white

Took a couple of the finished HDR images in nik software’s silver efex to do the Black and White conversion. I think these images convert to B&W very nicely, and the conversion capabilities in silver efex are great you can control all your tones, edges, vignettes, and grain.

Westfield freight depot -Straight out of the Camera

Another in this months railway theme.

This image is straight out of the camera. Under exposed to get detail in the sky and of course lost a lot of the detail in the building. Lets see what a Raw file and the non destructive editing in Lightroom 3 can do to bring back the detail in the building.

Doesn’t look bad from here. Work done mostly with the adjustment brush in Lightroom 3.

Hawk in flight

A lucky capture. All I had with me was the 7D with a 18-135mm, not long enough to get a full frame image. This is cropped a bit in Lightroom. It’s great to have the 18 mega pixels to allow the cropping. Just a little (very little) adjustment brush to lighten the under side and head of the bird.

Railroad Crossing – Westfield N.Y.

railroad crossing

Walker Rd railroad crossing - Westfield N.Y.

One more railroad related image. This image was taken at the Walker Rd crossing in Westfield N.Y. There was some work done on it in Lightroom 3 and plug ins to increase the whites in the clouds and enhance the blues in the sky also used the structure slider to sharpen things up a bit. Along the way I darkened down the foreground to keep your eye up in the sky and on the crossing guard equipment.

Speeding Train – Westfield N.Y.

Playing with a theme – Railroads, and railway related items. As a member of the Jamestown N.Y. audubon photo club we get monthly assignments and for October it is Railroads. So I’m working on some railroad related images.

The stats for this shot are as follows: Canon 7D, Canon 18-135mm zoom @ 44mm, 1/20th sec @ f29 ISO 100. The slow shutter speed give the train the look of high speed. With a faster shutter speed the train would have looked like it was just sitting still on the tracks, not to exciting.

If your in the area the Photo club meets at the Jamestown Audubon the second Thursday of the month at 6:30pm.

Northeast P.A. Passenger Train Station

Northeast P.A. train station

Passenger train station in Northeast P.A.

This is the Northeast P.A. Passenger train station which is now a railway museum. You can view numerous pieces of rolling stock, view displays inside the station and watch current trains traveling on the still active tracks outside the door. To find out more go to:  http: //www.grape-track.org/

The larger image is a single image of the station with some contrast added and some work with the adjustment brush in Lightroom3. The two smaller images are 3 image HDR’s. The 3 images are 2 stops each side of normal, the -2 stop image allows the blue in the sky to be pulled out and the clouds to look more cloud like rather than the gray mess of clouds seen in the upper image. The simple composite of the 3 images was done in PS5.

Football composite of player and score board

Football composite of player and score board

Finished composite – Practicing with the pen tool some more. I removed the player mostly with the quick select tool with some help from the pen tool. Them I cut out the score board using only the pen tool. Then  just for fun I played a little bit with the pen tool and shapes in the form of the ribbon and the blue and white lines which started out as a set of parallel rectangular shape and then they were shaped with the warp function in PS5. The score was also changed in favor of the home team.
