A photograph of fly fishing equipment. Once the equipment was arranged on the table the lights in the studio were turned out and the items were brushed over with a small LED flashlight, I tried to produce this product photograph in a single exposure but I couldn’t quite do it. So I focused on getting the proper exposure and look in smaller select areas and then took these 4 selections into Photoshop and combined them to produce the final image.

This is an interior architectural photograph of the St. Luke’s main sanctuary looking from the alter back to the main entrance. I used a 7 exposure bracket to produce this HDR image in niksoftware efexHDRpro 2, then some work in Photoshop and Lightroom to come up with the final look.

These two panoramic images where made on March 24, 2013. Using a Canon 5D Mark iii and a Canon 24-70 2.8L at 42mm. This is a 5 position HDR pano using 4 of the 7 bracketed exposures that I took at the time, that means that I combined 20 exposures 4 at each camera position and then took the resulting 5 images into Photoshop and merged them into a pano. Then I did a little enhancement in both photoshop and Lightroom to come up with what you see here.

New Photoshop Technique – Photos from Westfield N.Y. and Chautauqua Institution

10 03 2012

Have been working on a new technique in photoshop to blend a photo with a couple of other layers to give the image a painterly, drawing with a bit of the photo showing through it all.

The photograph was duped in PS5 and that dupe was changed into a black and white and then duped again and some filter effects added to give it a drawing look and then blended and combined on top of the photograph layer.  Then the background texture layer was brought in and moved to the bottom of the stack.  A multiply layer blend was added to the top layer and a black adjustment mask was added to the original photo layer to allow the selected blending of the whole group.

Another ad for a local brewery – self assigned photoshop exercise

11 01 2012

This is a self assigned photoshop exercise using a couple of images I already had on hand. The beer bottle label on the lighthouse is from the semi truck post made yesterday  and the Barcelona lighthouse and  harbor is a sunset panorama of the Barcelona lighthouse and harbor in Westfield N.Y. on Lake Erie is from 2010. The label was made to fit the lighthouse using the free transform tool in PS5. Some density control, contrast adjustment, and selective density control with the layers mask and bush tool was used to make the label appear that it is painted on the lighthouse.

If you have the opportunity to try some of Southern Tier Brewery’s offerings you should try it out.

Your next cold one’s on the way

10 01 2012

This is a composite image of the truck and beer bottle. The truck was taken at ISO 100, f13 @ 60th of a sec. with a 44mm zoom on the lens. The truck was moving at about 60 mph and I was hand holding the camera thru a pan.

The beer bottle was shot in the studio with 2 canon 580 exll on camera flashes, 1 on the camera for fill and one behind the bottle in a 24″x24″ softbox triggered with radio poppers. The on camera flash that was used for fill was 2 stops less than the back light.

Both images where taken into PS5 for the composite, motion blur was added to separate layers and dupes of layers to give me complete control. Some desaturation was added as well as color in the sky, darkening of the corners and sky, and I “constructed” the structure to support the neck of the bottle. I also added some noise to the bottle to better match the trucks noise or grain.

HDR image after lightpainting - Westfield N.Y. - Chautauqua Co. N.Y.

HDR image after lightpainting and then taken back into HDR software

The top two images are from a previous post showing the image after coming out of HDR efex pro, the the same image after doing some light painting in Photoshop CS5. I like the second image better than any of the straight out of camera image and the straight out of HDR software image but it still wasn’t right, what I envisioned as the finished image. I walked away from the image for awhile, when I  got back to it I took the light painted image into nik software HDR efex pro to rework it. With quite a bit of structure added to the image as well as some tonal control we have made the image look more like what I think it should.

I do this a lot. Walking away from an image and coming back to it days, weeks, even months later to rework it.

Toy train for composite

Percy the toy train for composite

Toy train hot glued to a 2×4 that is covered with white foam core. The 2×4 is attached to a bogen magic arm which is attached to a light stand. The magic arm allows me to adjust the position of the 2×4 to better match the angle of the bridge. The train was cut out of the image in PS5 using the pen tool and refine edge function.

The bridge image was taken with a 18 – 135 mm zoom at 38mm. The wires were removed in Photoshop. The image was also taken into HDR software where there was a little work done to enhance the image.

Straight out of the camera

Image #2

Light painted in Photoshop CS5. Duplicated image darkened down dupe with a levels adjustment layer and them painted away the dupe to shape and highlight sections of the image to give it some character that wasn’t in the original image.

Image #3

The light painted image was taken into HDR software to add saturation, structure (clarity) and vignette.

Pretty straight forward shot of a sculpture on the campus of Fredonia State University in Fredonia N.Y. Chautauqua County

There was a little tone adjustments (dodging and burning) done to lighten the sculpture a little and to tone down and even out the sky. The lens flare is right out of PS5

Railway cars in black and white

Took a couple of the finished HDR images in nik software’s silver efex to do the Black and White conversion. I think these images convert to B&W very nicely, and the conversion capabilities in silver efex are great you can control all your tones, edges, vignettes, and grain.
