A photograph of fly fishing equipment. Once the equipment was arranged on the table the lights in the studio were turned out and the items were brushed over with a small LED flashlight, I tried to produce this product photograph in a single exposure but I couldn’t quite do it. So I focused on getting the proper exposure and look in smaller select areas and then took these 4 selections into Photoshop and combined them to produce the final image.

Toy train for composite

Percy the toy train for composite

Toy train hot glued to a 2×4 that is covered with white foam core. The 2×4 is attached to a bogen magic arm which is attached to a light stand. The magic arm allows me to adjust the position of the 2×4 to better match the angle of the bridge. The train was cut out of the image in PS5 using the pen tool and refine edge function.

The bridge image was taken with a 18 – 135 mm zoom at 38mm. The wires were removed in Photoshop. The image was also taken into HDR software where there was a little work done to enhance the image.

Small product catalog type photography

A couple of quick basic catalog shots of small products. The method used was a small tent that the product sits inside. The light source was three on camera type speedlights one on each side and one over the top of the tent.

This is an exercise in using on-camera type flash units to produce a product photograph. This image was completely lit with multiple on camera type flash units and reflectors. 1-unit behind the shoe pointed up to a silver reflector to light the top of the shoe, 1-unit front at the far left skimming across side of shoe, 1-unit lighting the toe, 1-unit lighting the heel, 1-unit with a long snoot and grid to light the arch area, The image was shot as above and then shot as a silhouette with a white background to make adding the red glow easier in photoshop.

This image was produced as an exercise to control focus or attention using the depth of field control you have with your F-stops or aperture.

Lightpainting Studio Still life

This image is an attempt to control the look and feel of a studio shot to a point that you can’t control the highlights, shadows, sharpness and focus when taking an images. This image is a composite of two images of the same subject. One has a -3 stop exposure of the subject shot with a small softbox directly over head. The other image is shot with a small softbox at 90 degrees to the left of camera and a correct exposure is used. Once the images were taken into photoshop they were stacked on separate layers, with the underexposed image on top with heavy diffusion added. Then with an adjustment mask added to the top layer it was painted out to reveal the image below. By control the brush opacity and size you control the amount of the upper layer you leave.

Vidal Blanc

Vidal Blanc is a self assigned project consisting of a photograph that is composed of five images of a bottle of Johnson Estate Winery’s Vidal Blanc wine. Johnson Estate is the oldest estate winery in New York State and is located here in Westfield N.Y. on the Lake Erie plateau. The light source for three of the five images was a single on camera type flash unit that was fired multiple times to build up the exposure. The light streak was made with the help of a LCD flashlight with a number of individual bulbs in it. The image that provided the main body of the bottle was illuminated with the flashlight during a failed attempt at making the light streak. Once I had the five separate image I took them into photoshop CS4 to combine them, color correct and clean up the the light streak as well as adding the text which was taken from the wine bottle label.
