This HDR image is made up of 3 handheld exposures taken at Normal, -1, -2 stops and then combined in efex HDR and then taken into photoshop for some final touches.  To start the process off I had to take each image into photoshop to remove elements that the HDR program couldn’t keep from ghosting when the 3 images are combined. Then the images where taken into the HDR program to let it do it’s thing, which I think does a very good job. Then like I stated above it was taken into PS5 for some fine tuning. Location of image is the memory gardens at Tanglewood Manor in Jamestown N.Y.

New Photoshop Technique – Photos from Westfield N.Y. and Chautauqua Institution

10 03 2012

Have been working on a new technique in photoshop to blend a photo with a couple of other layers to give the image a painterly, drawing with a bit of the photo showing through it all.

The photograph was duped in PS5 and that dupe was changed into a black and white and then duped again and some filter effects added to give it a drawing look and then blended and combined on top of the photograph layer.  Then the background texture layer was brought in and moved to the bottom of the stack.  A multiply layer blend was added to the top layer and a black adjustment mask was added to the original photo layer to allow the selected blending of the whole group.

Another ad for a local brewery – self assigned photoshop exercise

11 01 2012

This is a self assigned photoshop exercise using a couple of images I already had on hand. The beer bottle label on the lighthouse is from the semi truck post made yesterday  and the Barcelona lighthouse and  harbor is a sunset panorama of the Barcelona lighthouse and harbor in Westfield N.Y. on Lake Erie is from 2010. The label was made to fit the lighthouse using the free transform tool in PS5. Some density control, contrast adjustment, and selective density control with the layers mask and bush tool was used to make the label appear that it is painted on the lighthouse.

If you have the opportunity to try some of Southern Tier Brewery’s offerings you should try it out.

Your next cold one’s on the way

10 01 2012

This is a composite image of the truck and beer bottle. The truck was taken at ISO 100, f13 @ 60th of a sec. with a 44mm zoom on the lens. The truck was moving at about 60 mph and I was hand holding the camera thru a pan.

The beer bottle was shot in the studio with 2 canon 580 exll on camera flashes, 1 on the camera for fill and one behind the bottle in a 24″x24″ softbox triggered with radio poppers. The on camera flash that was used for fill was 2 stops less than the back light.

Both images where taken into PS5 for the composite, motion blur was added to separate layers and dupes of layers to give me complete control. Some desaturation was added as well as color in the sky, darkening of the corners and sky, and I “constructed” the structure to support the neck of the bottle. I also added some noise to the bottle to better match the trucks noise or grain.

Black & White Conversion

18 10 2011

By Molly Kreeger

Photography By Molly Kreeger – www.mollykreegerphotography.com

Photoshop retouching by – Kurt A. Moore – Moore Images Photographic Services – Westfield N.Y.

The original images is a straight black and white conversion. You can see that the image needs some correction to make the image pop. A black and white image needs some true blacks and true whites and everything in between to make a good looking black and white conversion. We are working with a cute snapshot from Molly Kreeger Photography that you can see in the original image that is flat, muddy and overall grayish rather than black and white. With some contrast added a little bit of dodging and burning with the adjustment mask and a tiny bit of softening you turn a flat conversion into an image with a little pop and character.

This comparison is the original image and the results after being worked in niks software silver efex. The grain and sepia tones give the image an aged look. Just playing with different effects.

Percy in Westfield N.Y. – Railroad image

Toy train for composite

Percy the toy train for composite

Toy train hot glued to a 2×4 that is covered with white foam core. The 2×4 is attached to a bogen magic arm which is attached to a light stand. The magic arm allows me to adjust the position of the 2×4 to better match the angle of the bridge. The train was cut out of the image in PS5 using the pen tool and refine edge function.

The bridge image was taken with a 18 – 135 mm zoom at 38mm. The wires were removed in Photoshop. The image was also taken into HDR software where there was a little work done to enhance the image.

Sunrise picture of the Chautauqua Institution’s Miller Bell Tower and Chautauqua Lake N.Y. which is in the western part of New York State in Chautauqua County. Sitting at the computer with 40 degree temps outside and just figured a nice summer time sunrise images would make people feel a little warmer. Hope it worked.

The above image is a 3 frame HDR image to get detail into the shadows on a contrasty day.

With this image I took the results from the HDR combined images into photoshop and did some light painting to give the car a little character and shape.

Couplers – Railway

Coupler - straight out of camera - normal exp.

The following image is a 3 image HDR  that was taken from the HDR software into photoshop. While in photoshop I did some light painting in a levels layer mask to highlight edges and just highlight the features and details that I wanted to bring your attention too.

Walker Rd railroad crossing - Westfield N.Y.

One more railroad related image. This image was taken at the Walker Rd crossing in Westfield N.Y. There was some work done on it in Lightroom 3 and plug ins to increase the whites in the clouds and enhance the blues in the sky also used the structure slider to sharpen things up a bit. Along the way I darkened down the foreground to keep your eye up in the sky and on the crossing guard equipment.

Northeast P.A. Passenger Train Station

Northeast P.A. train station

Passenger train station in Northeast P.A.

This is the Northeast P.A. Passenger train station which is now a railway museum. You can view numerous pieces of rolling stock, view displays inside the station and watch current trains traveling on the still active tracks outside the door. To find out more go to:  http: //www.grape-track.org/

The larger image is a single image of the station with some contrast added and some work with the adjustment brush in Lightroom3. The two smaller images are 3 image HDR’s. The 3 images are 2 stops each side of normal, the -2 stop image allows the blue in the sky to be pulled out and the clouds to look more cloud like rather than the gray mess of clouds seen in the upper image. The simple composite of the 3 images was done in PS5.

This image was taken at 135mm from about 1/4 to 1/3 of mile away over a vineyard which you can just see at the bottom of the frame. There were other houses and farm building on both sides, so the barn got placed in the middle of the scene. Some processing in Lightroom, Photoshop and HDR efex to give it an aged, grainy look.

Truck in front of Johnson Estate Winery - Composite

The truck I found parked in a parking lot at the Chautauqua Mall. The truck image was taken with a Canon G12 point and shoot camera, it was all I had with me. The truck was cut out of its background using the pen tool in PS5, I also cleaned up the front fender and the door of the truck to reduce the reflection in both. The side and rear windows were also cut out to show the background. The background was burned in or darkened were the window are to indicate the tint of the windows.

A little under exposed perhaps but brightening it up would cause the sky to lose all detail.

Patterson Library - Processed in Lightroom 3

Patterson Library - Westfield N.Y. - Processed in Lightroom 3

This image was developed in Lightroom 3. We have a more interesting image, not as flat, more contrast, more pop in the colors, more detail in the sky, and just more interesting to look at.

Patterson Library - garden HDR

Patterson Library - garden view HDR

This image is a 3 frame HDR. Starting with a normal exposure, +1stop and a -2stop  to get more blue in the sky. The image also received some adjustment brush work in Lightroom 3 to light up the flowers, the building and the fence structure along with the bench.

Which one do you like better and why? Please leave comments.
