Fredonia State HDR

30 07 2011

I received some new software in the mail yesterday. Nik Software’s HDR Efex, it’s a HDR processing program that has been getting some pretty good revues in all the photography sources. I went to Fredonia State to look for High contrast images. I needed to put HDR Efex through its paces. With this series of  images you will see one that is the best exposure straight out of the camera, one that is an artistic interpretation  of the processed exposures and one that is the most realistic of the presets that come packaged with the software program.

The HDR’s are made up of 5 frames- 1 at the normal camera meter settings, then +1,+2 Stops and -1, -2 stops.

Look at the shadow and highlight details that show up better in the HDR.

Interesting program with a lot of potential, I’m going to have to play a hole lot more.

Chautauqua Institution Lake Front Image Deconstructed

29 07 2011

I’m hoping to start a series of how I came up with the final images that you see on this blog. I would like you to believe that every image that you view here is straight out of the camera but most have at least a little bit of post processing done to them. I am under the belief that you should use all the resources you have available to use. In the old days of photography before digital, we used different film to get different looks, we dodge and burned the image while printing, we composited and retouch or paid someone else to do it.  Today when I go out the door to shoot I am thinking about how I can get the best image in the camera, but I’m also thinking what new resources I have at my disposal. Resources like dedicated Flashes, Photoshop, Lightroom, and all the plug-ins that are available. I don’t think “PHOTOSHOPING” an image is a bad thing. I think it’s just a tool to help you produce the artistic vision you have as a photographer.

Image No#1 -Canon 7D at 24mm @F22 and 1/200 of sec

This is the first shot I took. The Exposure Comp was still set from previous shot.

Image No#2-Canon 7D at 18mm@F22 and 1/50th of a sec

This is the next image taken as you can see I dropped the shutter speed to 1/50th of a sec. That’s +2 stops from the previous frame and I zoomed the lens out to its widest setting.

Image No#3-Canon 7D at 18mm@F22 and 1/25th of a sec

I opened up another stop to end up at my final exposure 1/25th of a sec

Image No#4- Same camera and camera settings

With the same camera settings I added a flash to bring some detail into the flowers and building. The flash was on manual and full power.

Image No#5-Same camera and camera settings

The only difference is that I turned down the flash by 1stop to 1/2 power

Image No#6-Same camera and camera settings

Once again I turned down the flash power by 1stop to 1/4 power which ended up being the right combination of camera setting and flash power setting.

The final image that appears above is the result of the trial and error from above and some post processing in Lightroom 3 and a Lightroom plug-in from Nik software called Viveza 2. In Lightroom 3 I used the adjustment brush to darken the lower edge of the image, removed some bird from the sky with the spot removal tool and put a slight vignette around the entire image. In Viveza 2 I added the warm tones you see in the sky and front of the building. I also used Viveza 2 to open up the shadows in the flowers.

I hope you like this new series of how I come up with the final images that I post and print.

These images were taken on July 21, 2011. It’s about some of the details you can find around the grounds at Chautauqua. I also tried to use my 10mm-20mm zoom lens on a couple of them, this lens doesn’t get a lot of use so it was an opportunity to force me to use it.

Up at 4am to be on the lake front by the Miller Bell Tower before sunrise. The before sunrise color was better than the color after the sun cleared the mountain. I worked the area from about 5:20 am -8:00 and then shot a couple more images from 9:45-10:30 am.

Barcelona New York Harbor Sunset Panorama

30 09 2010

On this night I happened to look out the window while working on the computer. The entire sky and landscape had this great orange yellow glow to it so I grabbed the camera and headed out the door the see what the sunset looked like over lake erie at Barcelona Harbor in Westfield New York. The sunset over the lake was incredible. There were more people photographing this sunset than I have ever seen. The small size that I can produce here doesn’t do the panos any justice at all.

Barcelona Harbor Light

20 09 2010

It’s starting to look like I live to close to the Barcelona Lighthouse and Harbor with the number of Lighthouse and harbor post I have on the blog, but it is a great place to live and the sunsets can be breath taking. If you don’t spend much time on the North Coast of Chautauqua Co. you should make plans to spend sometime enjoying all that this area has to offer.

Photoshop composite- combining Barcelona harbor sunset and crossfire photograph

18 08 2010

The finished image that you see here takes two of my photographs and combines them into one, the difficulty of combining these two images was to get the cars size proportioned correctly with the Light House and to get the lights from the cars- the headlights and marker lights to show up on the ground as if it was really there. This was accomplished in Photoshop of course by combining two multiple layers one of the lighthouse image one and one of the car image. When combining multiple images it’s important to start with two or more quality photographs if you have bad images going in it’s hard to make a good finished product. I believe that both of these images work well together because of how the images seem to fit together as if it was originally shot that way.

Trying to make a believable composite of the last two post. What do you think?

Crossfire large product photography

16 08 2010

This photograph that was taken on the shores of Lake Erie in Westfield New York started out as an exercise in lighting a large product with small on camera type flashes. After finding the correct ambient light exposure using the shutter speed to record the sunset at the tone I felt was proper I set up two on camera type flash units facing back towards the trees with orange gels on each to provide some colored detail to the trees and surrounding foliage. The next step in the process was to place two additional on camera type flash units on the ground facing towards the car to illuminate the ground under the car. An additional single flash unit was placed inside the car to light the interior. One more stationary flash was placed on a small light stand facing the car from camera position to provide illumination onto the grass in front of the car. Each of the the flash groupings as described above were exposed separately to allow me some flexibility while combining the exposures in Photoshop. The headlights and marker lights on the car itself were also exposed as a separate exposure. The exposure on the car itself was accomplished with multiple flash pops from a unit in a 24″ x 24″ soft box. During the multiple pops of the flash unit I walked around the car to accomplish an even smooth lighting on the side of the car as well as on the front of the car and the hood. With the seven separate exposures in the camera one for the sunset, one for the trees, one for the ground behind the car, one for the interior of the car, one for the headlights and marker lights, one for the foreground exposure and one for the light painting of the car itself I took all these exposures into Photoshop and combined them to come up with the finished product you see here. The reason that I spent this much time and energy making so many individual exposures was to give me the flexibility I needed in Photoshop to control each element independent of each other that way I can control color brightness density in any of the other adjustments to come up with exactly the image that I have envisioned in my mind before I get started.

Sunset photography Barcelona Harbor New York

While working in photoshop last night I looked out the window and everything was orange. Figuring it could only mean a great sunset that I was missing was happening right outside the house. I grabbed my camera and headed out the door for Barcelona Harbor and lighthouse. Once I arrived I found this incredible sunset and the most photographers I have ever scene at the harbor trying there hand at capturing one of natures marvels. This photograph of the lighthouse and sunset is made up of two exposures that where combined in photoshop. I really would like to see what the other photographers came away with that night.

before and after-flag added to building

22 07 2010

This image came about because I needed a red/white/and blue subject matter for a camera club that I belong too. The image was take on a very hot, humid over cast day as you can see. The challenge was to add the flag image to the building and make it look believable. The work was preformed in photoshop of course. I preformed some contrast corrections, color corrections, added a blue gradient to the sky and then started removing elements from the building(old painted sign, metal welches sign, shadows) as well as cleaning up some of the surroundings. Then I added the flag by rotating it to a horizontal and reshaping it with the transform tool, lowering it opacity and working with a displacement map to make it look like it was actually on the building.

Peek n’ Peak

3 07 2010

This image was produced for the Ski Resort property management office, if you look at the inset image you can see that the property had been plowed and looked dirty etc. I used the driveway of an unplowed condo to add to this image to give it a cleaner look, there was also a little light painting to add some highlights to the building and just for fun I did the sky writing. The text was done manually. The snow text was accomplished by doing multiple layers of painted white areas with drop shadows added to each layer separately. Lots and Lots of layers. The wood grain on the text was hand drawn.

Joke for a Friend

2 07 2010

I had a friend that worked maintenance for Condos at a Ski Resort and always complained about the amount of snow shoveling he had to do during the season. This is how I responded to his complaining.
